WTMusic LIVE Interview: Wills and Johnuel of Toothgrinder

We Talk Music is live on location at the Palace Theatre in Calgary and Brett is joined by Toothgrinder drummer Wills Weller and guitarist Johnuel Hasney. Lots of info here about their current trek with All That Remains and Lacuna Coil, “The Disease of the Anima tour“, and their new album I Am.

Trying to escape the booming noise of the soundcheck, we thought it was a good idea to do the interview in the back alley behind the club. For the most part this provided a fairly quiet interview space, until a car drove by and splashed us all with mud. We all had a good laugh and kept on chatting about the Disease of the Anima tour as well as a bunch of other topics including:

Johnuel of Toothgrinder
  • Whether they ask for advice from older bands
  • The new album I Am, and the updated sound
  • The message the band is trying to promote with their music
  • The origin of Toothgrinder
  • How they update their sound for every album
  • Albums vs singles and the decisions the band has to make
  • Their mascot Jubilee and its evolution
  • Doing the Megadeth cruise
  • What the fans should expect from a Toothgrinder show

“I do not want to go into another long-winded rant, but those who have heard the last two songs we have released from I AM and have read my passages know what this whole record is about. I want to keep this about us — those suffering and willing to change for the better. If anyone is in the throes of alcoholism, addiction and/or co-dependency, please get in contact with me at justinpaynerecovery@gmail.com. I love you all!” — Justin Payne Matthews, vocals
