WTMusic Interview: Matt Barlow – You Know His Name

Recently Brett had the pleasure of chatting with Matt Barlow, (best known for being a former singer of Iced Earth) who is now promoting his band Ashes of Ares.

During the interview, they talk about the new album Well of Souls (available now from Rock of Angels Records), especially the trilogy of songs “Let All Despair, “In the Darkness”, and “Spirit of Man”. They also talk “The Alien” including the famous character the song is based on.

Matt goes in to the recording of the album, and how different it was from the first album. He talks about how he and guitarist Freddie Vidales create the songs and work together.

Matt also discusses his vocal process and how he managed to learn to sing in the amazing way that he does.

They talk about the potential of the band touring despite both members having separate careers outside of the music industry, and how they manage to juggle those pressures.

James Bond comes up in conversation due to the cover of Chris Cornell’s “You Know My Name” that is a bonus track on the album.

Finally, Matt talks about being in law enforcement and being in a metal band and some of the similarities and differences in it.

Matt Barlow is a gracious guest with an interesting take on the music industry and there are some excellent points brought up in this fascinating interview.
