WTMusic: Helix Interview and Concert Review

Helix, the Godfathers of Canadian Heavy Metal, recently played a fantastic concert with another storied band i t Prism. But before the show Brett & Mo headed up to lead singer Brian Vollmer‘s hotel room for an exclusive podcast interview.

Brian tells us all about the new Helix album Old School, and why he thinks it’s so good. The album is a collection of unreleased tracks Brian has found as he’s getting ready to move Planet Helix to a new location.

This leads to a lot of talk of the cool things Brian has collected over the years. He also tells us about all the amazing people his wife Lynda has met over the years. Her story is truly fascinating.

Also, Brian tells us about his relationship with Gene Simmons. And he gives us a scoop on who he toured with years ago he actually thought was truly a dick. Brian also talks about how CRTC rules about radio stations having to play Canadian content actually keeps new music from being heard. And there’s also a great chat about how doing many projects pays off eventually, but how patience can be the key.

After the interview we got a chance to watch the band perform, as they supported Prism on this night. Helix proved why they continue to be a top flight live act. The band has a great catalog of songs, and are a tight, professional group. This was a night when as many in the audience were Prism fans as Helix fans, and they skew towards a slightly different audience. But that hardly matters. When you see Helix live, they will earn your respect.

Prism was also a fun part of the show. It’s hard to believe Al Harlow assumed lead vocal, as well as lead guitar, duties so late into Prism’s timeline. He has a remarkable voice that’s eerily similar to original singer Ron Tabak.

On this night a charming and relaxed Harlow led his talented veteran band to a crowd pleasing, and surprisingly interactive, performance. They certainly earned the White Hat honor bestowed upon them by the city on this night.

The end of the evening came with an extra special surprise. First, former Trooper drummer, Calgary’s own Frankie Baker make a surprise appearance on skins. Then the legend Brian Vollmer returned to share the stage with Al Harlow and the rest of the band.

Seeing two giants of Canadian music onstage was a special moment. And the mix of Helix and Prism coming together to perform “Take Me to the Kaptin” was magical. It capped, or should I say kapped, off a tremendous night.
