WTMusic WeView Review: JORN – ON DEATH ROAD DVD
There’s an upside and a downside to a concert video like this. The upside is that you get to see a great singer perform anytime you want. That’s especially good for those of us who have never seen that singer live. The downside is that it sure makes me wish I was in the audience for the show!
Jorn Lande has enjoyed a long and rocking career and brings that to the stage for the Live on Death Road album and DVD, releasing June 14th from Frontiers SSL. You can see Jorn’s experience as he prowls the stage, singing his songs with almost shocking ease. The vocals are positively effortless and he sounds as good now as he ever has.
Watching the video, I couldn’t help be reminded of Ronnie James Dio and the way he commanded the stage. It is obvious that Jorn has incorporated elements of Dio into his repertoire. But he is most certainly not a copycat, he is his own performer.
The songs are top notch from throughout his discography. He opens with the first couple songs from Bring Heavy Rock to the Land, and never lets up. Some of the highlights include Sunset Station, Walking On Water and Traveller.
I brought up Dio earlier, and Jorn pays tribute to the master with a couple of tracks from Ronnie James. It’s a masterful job of performing both Mob Rules and Rainbow in the Dark but in Jorn’s own style.
The band is tight without being over the top. There is no excess here. Tore Moren is a beast. It’s amazing to hear a single player make it sound like multiple guitarists are playing the song. Some of that is made up by bassist Sid Ringsby ably holding down the back end.
One of the interesting things is that there are two drummers. We start out the evening with Beata Polak, and then the next thing you know Francesco Jovino is flailing away on the skins. But one of the most magical parts of this performance is the fact that Jorn is accompanied by the Maestro, Alessandro Del Vecchio on the keyboards. There aren’t enough words to describe what Alessandro brings to a performance, and needless to say, his presence here was welcome.
For those who haven’t seen Jorn live this is a fitting collection of songs and an excellent live album/DVD. The video has lots of interesting angles and gives you a good view of the action most of the time. Clocking in at just over 90 minutes, you are definitely getting your money’s worth with this set. If Jorn’s desire is to bring heavy rock to the land, then this is a great way to do that. Jorn and his band bring their “A” game for this release. For fans of straight ahead hard rock with a touch of Dio, this should be considered a must.
