Set in ancient Greece where demi-gods are known to walk around, the ever cute and feisty mortal named Gabrielle finds herself accosted by three opportunist thugs on a road to Athens. Not willing to go down without a fight, she gladly verbally and physically assaults her assailants but only for a moment. Just before they can do anything worse to her, the wandering ex-warlord Xena shows up to settle the odds. As the dust settles, it is revealed that Xena has a deeper connection to those men and an even darker revelation of her past deeds.
Xena fans would obviously be expecting fun action from Xena and her spitfire sidekick Gabrielle, but what are the odds that her character’s ominous past would be touched upon in the first issue in Dynamite’s Xena -Warrior Princess? Although this issue is a quick read, writer Meredith Finch seems eager to have the lead characters hit the ground running.
Adding to this goal, Artist Vicente Cifuentes adds enough details and nuances to facial expressions that conveys all the feelings of the characters experience. There is nothing worse than a comic character who forgets they are in a comic! Colorist Triona Farrell makes sure the action is graciously smooth and dramatic by using deep contrasting color palettes. Together they made sure the sudden appearance of Xena with her jet black hair and bright red flowing cape would leave quite the impression on the reader.
As if Hercules could do better.
I can only suspect that with such a team up of these two ladies who attract drama like magnets, there will be plenty of swords, sandals, hi-jinx, and revelations to come with every future issue. Now let us all say the Xena fan club oath: “AYIYIIYIYIYIYII”!
