From the publisher: Travel to a galaxy far, far away in this collection of Star Wars comic book tales! FN-2187 turns a bad day and troublesome pest into praise from Captain Phasma. Luke and Leia undertake a high-stakes, two-part undercover mission on Tibrin with explosive results. Plus more stories with K-2SO, Cassian, Emil, CR-8R, and the rebels vs. the Empire expand the world of Star Wars into new territory for a new generation of fans. Collects Issues #3–5.
Our WTComics WeView: The one thing about the Star Wars universe is that there is plenty of room to tell many different stories that can still bring us back to its core. Whether a fan thinks Star Wars should have more or less drama, romance, comedy, politics or whatever, the latest collection from Disney’s Star Wars Adventures should be an interesting read.
Within the five contained stories, we encounter new and known characters in different situations. In “Pest Control” FN-2187 (pre-Force Awakens) tries to contain a furry mess before Captain Phasma and Kylo Ren catch on to what’s happening. “The Trouble at Tibrin” (pre-Empire Strikes Back) see Luke captured by Imperial forces after a botched diplomatic mission. This forces Princess Leia to go deep undercover inside a Star Destroyer to attempt a rescue.
The next three small stories approach the Star Wars theme with a series of life lessons and exploration. Young Master Emil and his robotic friend Boo trade stories with a flustered droid named Crater to pass the time in wild space. The tale of “Adventures in Wookiee-Sitting” (Pre-Rogue One), has Cassian and K-2 rescuing a juvenile Wookiee from Imperial interests. But this also means that K-2 must endure the unbearable while a Rebel raid ensues without him. “Mattis Makes a Stand” (post-Return of the Jedi), shows how a young man is forced to immediately decide how he should help his friends by reflecting on the heroism of legendary Rebellion heroes. Lastly, in “The Best Pet”, the reader is taken on an animal study of the Porgs that were introduced in The Last Jedi. Did you know that not only are Porgs worse than raccoons, but a group of them is called a Murder?!
The interesting thing about all these stories is that they can truly exist within the ongoing Star Wars canon and add to its depth in either a fast / lighter or inspirational way. Heck, the back cover even states that these stories “expand the world of Star Wars into new territory for a new generation of fans.” Mission very much accomplished.
Along with these new story ideas and fun canon expanding themes, Star Wars Adventures also lets the reader take in the talent of the various people that brought this book to life. The artist Eric Jones appears to be having a lot of fun within his own style (thank goodness for us) and artist Arianna Florean‘s fluid style sure makes illustration look easy… darn her. It is also interesting to note the artistic work of Annie Wu in the last story. She continues to bring her own distinct flair to any project she does and Disney did well to keep her on for this project. Make sure to check out her talented work on Instagram or Twitter.
