From the publisher – When pizza is the driving force of your life, there’s Pizza Boyz. When video games become a way of existence, there’s Pizza Boyz. When you need a grand laugh after a hard days night, there’s Pizza Boyz. When its date night and Mario Kart is the right choice, there’s Pizza Boyz. When your favorite flicks always involve dinosaurs, there’s Pizza Boyz.
Our We Talk Comics WeView – I’m going to get the bad out of the way first, because there’s honestly not much, but it’s worth bring up.
Page one contains a spelling error. I’m sure the creator is well aware. It’s unfortunate, but it happens. If you notice it I encourage you to let it go quickly and get on with enjoying the comic.
The 2nd problem is a little more touchy. One character use homophobic slurs. While I’m not into getting too political on these pages I have to say I wish Spencer Scott Holmes had made another choice, and hopefully does in the future. While I’m all for trying to be organic to the world you’re creating literally a hundred other words could have been substituted instead just as effectively, and it’s words I’d prefer we just stopped using.
With that out of the way… This is a fantastic book.
The characters are instantly relatable. They focus on the things they consider most important in life. Pizza, video games and beer, and judge anyone who wants more out of life negatively. Let’s face it, a lot of us have been there.
The dialogue is spot on, making a lot of smart pop culture references. Similarly the art is fantastic. I know it’s not exactly Greg Capullo but ask yourself, what is the point of comic book art? I think it’s to create a world you can believably escape in and give characters a visual personality, and Spencer Scott Holmes does that exceedingly well.
So, provided you can get past the issues listed at the top of this review, I really hope people give this comic a shot. It’s funny and proudly wears it’s indie roots on it’s sleeve, give it a try folks.
Recommended for: Fans of Clerks, Slacker, Major Bummer, Quantum and Woody,
Rating: Very Fine+ (VF+) or 8.5/10
