From the Publisher – The greatest American heroes go face-to-face with the most dangerous living weapon… Steve Austin! It’s a showdown between ’70s icons-kung-fu grip vs. bionic eye!
Hacked by COBRA, the Six Million Dollar Man has the JOEs in his sights as the fate of the world peace hangs by a thread and Cobra Commander holds the world’s infrastructure in his venomous clutches! Do the JOEs stand a chance against the bionic man, or is he simply better, faster, stronger?
Our We Talk Comics WeView – Having a bad day? Do you need something to distract you from your worries but don’t have the mental acuity to dive right into the continuity heavy, morally ambiguous nightmare that most comics have become? Then this is the book for you. G.I. Joe vs. Six Million Dollar Man #1 features lots of mustache twirling villains and old friends to soothe your aches and pains just beyond the cover.
Somehow Ryan Ferrier dips into my personal nostalgia toy box and brings out my favorite Cobras to menace the Joes. Dr. Mindbender, Zartan, and the Baroness all make early appearances to menace our heroes. Don’t worry though, the other titular franchise is also well-represented, with Oscar Goldman and even some vintage Steve Austin accessories coming into play.
Being of the era when these properties were a phenomenon I enjoyed jumping into a time machine to play with my old toys (if only I had some Captain Crunch on hand). While I have a hard time believing a new audience would be lost in this simple, fun tale. I do wonder if reading this without nostalgia goggles would bring the same kind of delight. On the other hand, those of us who grew up with these action heroes are exactly who this book is aimed for.
My only disappointment for this book is the variant action figure cover has three and a quarter inch figures rather than the thirteen inch 6 Million Dollar Man type that I remember and 12 inch original Joes of the 60’s… Oh well, there is always next issue.
Have the kind of fun that only a vs. comic can provide, and pick G.I. Joe vs. Six Million Dollar Man #1 up.
Rating – Very Fine (VF) or 8/10
