From the publisher: At the end of the year 2020, a team of military veterans are out to uncover a secret fortune built from the ashes of 9/11 so vast that it could disrupt the entire global economy. Their primary target is a beautiful young billionaire who crosses time zones with disconcerting ease. They don’t know it yet, but this mysterious Lady of Dubai has ample means to defend herself… and to fight back.
This near-future political thriller, written by THIERRY SMOLDEREN and illustrated by DOMINIQUE BERTAIL, draws from today’s headlines and budding technologies, setting up a cyberwar in both reality and virtual reality.
Our We Talk Comics WeView – Originally a 2007 release over in France, “Ghost Money” has found new life thanks to publisher Lion Forge Comics. It’s certainly easy to see why they imported it, as this European title confirms comic readers should look across the ocean for some quality reads. This first issue takes place in a post 9-11 world, and here we meet a young activist named Lindsey.
As the book opens Lindsey is taking part in a chaotic protest in London. It’s not long before all hell breaks loose, during which Lindsey is pulled aside by an affluent woman, thus saving her from the ensuing chaos. Suddenly Lindsey finds herself being whisked away around the globe by this beautiful young billionairess, who is seemingly just seeking distractions from the real world.
Lindsey though soon finds herself conflicted. Should she choose this lifestyle with her new, apolitical friend? Or should she go back to her previous life with her father in dreary old England? Even more complications arise when Lindsey learns that her friend may in fact be more than she appears. You see, Lindsey begins to suspect her mysterious benefactor may actually have ties to America’s War on Terror.
The great thing about this comic is how much content is squeezed into the pages. It’s full of story and character development, all brought to life beautifully by the art. A great example of this happens in a portion where Lindsey’s narrative is supplanted with an intense flashback. During this chain of events, we witness the hunt of a suspected Al-Qaeda member. This harrowing sequence involves the torture of a prisoner by water boarding, and will likely leave a lasting impression on you.
The colors of Ghost Money – the Lady of Dubai. are lush. Some panels are practically masterpieces of illustration. Special attention is paid during during the depiction of a very near future, which is complete with plausible technological advances likely just a few days away. Certainly so if Kickstarter has anything to do with it.
I am quite sure the following issues of “Ghost Money” will give us more interesting characters. If this first chapter is any indication I would also expect they tie together complex plot points while deepening the larger story. Given that speculation, and with the quality of issue #1, Ghost Money – the Lady of Dubai should absolutely not be overlooked!
