We Talk Comics officially celebrates it’s 5 year anniversary today, August 17, 2016. For such an occasion we are so happy to celebrate it with you on a show very special to hosts Brett, Chris, Keith and Mo.

J.M. DeMatteis is a writer who’s work has mesmerized and touched the hearts and souls of comic book readers around the world since the late 1970’s. In those years he’s pushed the boundaries of what story telling in the comic book medium can be and influenced not only the work of many talented creators who’ve followed him but also has expanded the imaginations of the readers who’ve been enlightened and entertained by these books.

Of course J.M. is still going strong and today joins the show for the first time to talk about his latest creator owned project The Adventures Of Augusta Wind, Vol. 2: The Last Story, as well as the upcoming collected edition of the brilliant Seekers Into The Mystery which will be collected for the first time in a complete volume through Dover Publications, available Jan 18, 2017.

Along the way J.M. DeMatteis not only teaches the guys so much about writing and the world but they all share a great deal of laughs while talking such comics as Brooklyn Dreams, Moonshadow, Blood: A Tale, Scooby Apocalypse and topics like working with Keith Giffen, Glen Barr, Michael Zulli, and Vassilis Gogtzilas among others.

Also discussed is related subjects such as his musical career and his How Many Lifetimes CD from 1997, humor in comics, the Batman Legends Of The Dark Knight #65-58 storyline Going Sane and so much more.

A huge thank you to J.M. DeMatteis for his time.We really believe this may be the best show we’ve ever done because of his generosity, and thanks to all of you for listening to us talk about comics. Here’s to another great 5 years!

  • This helped concretize some good questions for my own interview with JMD, thanks.
Hey, as a Spider-Man fan from my earliest memories in this life, I have to share I also lucked into
my “birthday issue” as my first comic, too, thanks to Marvel Tales: Doc Ock marries Aunt May. Luck indeed: I got to read it while
I was young enough to think it was great 😀

JM gets asked about Justice League enough to where I appreciate the creator-owned emphasis you chose. (You still got us the “inner idiot” quote, lol)
But he also has cartoon scripts and at least one Twilight Zone episode, too. I see even with an hour-plus, it’s one
hard career to encompass (though he insists a biography would be pretty dull, but what does he know, it’s only his life).

I wonder what your Savior 28 question would be like? I just finished that for the first time, two weeks ago.
I’m even pondering an I, Vampire question- since I asked about Marvel Team-Up and Defenders, before.

I wish I could dig further into how Roger STern’s Spider-Man work inspired his own Spidey stories at the time; 80’s Spidey books were so coherent in their way, you know? MTU included.

I finally got my copy of Augusta Wind #1 to read in the middle of another interview, my pro job with V3 Magazine, where I interviewed a comics shop, What If? in Rome, GA. Thanks for the interesting tidbits about that world.

He and Keith have Hero Squared out there, too, which I’m reminded of by the Scooby Doo: Apocalypse book.
I will check and see if any of the “no comment” stuff from the Plug section has been declassified!
My first part of the interview is up already on Outright Geekery. Did you Skype with JM? Lucky! 😀

    • It was a Skype interview, that’s typically how we’re joined by our guests. We got to barely scratch the surface with JM, even if we avoided the most obvious topics. He’s had a fascinating career and is a fascinating man. We hope to have him on for part 2 of what we want to be a 413 part interview series with him soon!

But seriously, thanks for your feedback, we appreciate it. I’d say Brett would be the best one to answer your Savior 28 question.
