We Talk Comics sometimes has controversy, sometimes argument, sometimes soapboxing. Not this week. This episode, the team gets together to enjoy their shared love of a comic creator whose work helped shape super-hero comics from the Big 2 for a generation before again breaking new ground on creator owned properties.
Few comic creators have had such a far-reaching impact on the super-hero genre as John Byrne. One of the first superstar artists, Byrne set the standard for the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and so many other books, and his work continues to be drawn upon today.
Mo, Brett, Chris, and Keith sit down with a list of their all-time favourite John Byrne comics to spark conversation and reminisce about this writer/artist and erstwhile Canadian whose work has meant so much to them over the decades.
Byrne’s Fantastic Four is widely considered the gold standard for the super-hero family. Despite several attempts to replace his 1986 reboot, Byrne’s take on Superman has once again returned to the lead role in the DC Universe. Even Byrne’s relatively short run on West Coast Avengers is still being mined for plot material decades later.
The guys have very different lists (well, mostly different) and we hope you will be not only following along but writing up a bit of a shopping list. This episode is a celebration of the work of John Byrne from his early Marvel work to some books he has done much more recently.
This episode was brought to you by the letter F, the number 4, and the algebraic equation Doomsday+1.
