WTP Special: Kevin McDonald, Lemonade Monkey

We Talk Podcasts is proud to welcome a very special guest to the show! Brett is joined by Kids In the Hall cast member Kevin McDonald to promote his “rock opera” that he is performing December 13th at the Rivoli TheatreĀ in Toronto . We’ll let Kevin explain, but you should still listen to the podcast.

For my Toronto show, people can expect a comic, mini rock opera that I wrote – even though I’m not a musician. Some nerve, huh? It doesn’t have a lot of chords but it’s a true, disgusting story that happened to me and Dave Foley in the early 90s in New York and Toronto.

When I was a kid, the 7th thing I liked (2 of the other 5 were the Beatles and Get Smart) was Jesus Christ, Superstar. I played and sang horribly in the part of Judas in Catholic high school. Oh that’s another thing people should know – I can’t sing – though at the rock opera, I will be singing.

I always wanted to write and perform my own rock opera. So I bought a guitar and taught myself a few chords (I hope people like G. There will be a lot of G in this rock opera). The show will have real and talented singers, and the amazing Alun Piggins playing the guitar (Don’t worry, I won’t play guitar.. but I do sing), and also playing the part of Dave. I play the part of Kevin. I had to audition for it. And though it’s a disgusting, true story, I think it’s funny and I promise not to ruin the songs.

Kevin and Brett talk about the the difficulty of writing comedy, and how much work it was for him to learn to be an improv performer, plus the special bond he shares with the other members of Kids in the Hall.

Kevin McDonald also talks about the things that go into being a voice actor. Besides working for Disney on Lilo & Stitch, he has an animated movie on Netflix right now called “Invader Zim: Enter the Florpus“, based on the animated series “Invader Zim“.

He talks about being on a “Bob Dylan” never ending tour where he goes to a different city every weekend, teaching during the days, and performing at night. Most recently he stopped here in Calgary.

Along with the Rock Opera, he’s currently writing a pilot for the producer of Schitt’s Creek, plus he goes around the country doing his podcast in front of live audiences. You should check it out, it’s very funny and it also has a (shorter) version of the “rock opera” he’ll be performing in Toronto.

Plus he talks about some potential plans for Kids In The Hall in 2020.

Kevin McDonald is a wonderful interview. He’s chock full of energy and has no shortage of projects on the go. Thankfully between his lemonade monkey and my orange juice monkey, we manage to keep well hydrated.

Lots of great stuff in this interview, so check it out, because we are looking to finish the year strong with the interviews you want! And you can be sure to expect plenty of big announcements coming for We Talk Podcasts in 2020!
