Our We Talk Comics WeView – I am a comic snob as well as a grumpy old man. There is nothing I enjoy more than to tell all these young whippersnappers how much better comics were in my day. That’s probably why I hang out every week with my buddies
Mo and Brett (who are also old and grumpy) to record The We Talk Comics podcast. So you wouldn’t expect this grumpy old man to read or like My Little Pony, but you’d be wrong.. I’m a bit of a fan.
Over the years while podcasting I’ve run into artists working on the book. That fits with the fact I’m usually curious what books from this franchise will be like, and every time I’ve tried one I’ve actually been surprisingly impressed. IDW’s My Little Pony comics seem to be a child friendly, licensed property, that can’t be torn down with my jaded guile and cynical ways. True, it will never make my pull list, but I’m an old man and old men reading about pink ponies I find more than a little creepy, so I’m content to leave this fandom alone. Still, I can’t deny the quality coming out of these titles. This book continues the trend and I continue to be impressed by My Little Pony comics.
This issue of My Little Pony: Legends of Magic is the series finale and an absolute joy. We follow Stygian, a young pony who believes he has no special abilities. He gathers heroes to save his village and along the way we learn about the history of Equestria, even going so far as to learn the origin of the franchise tag line “Friendship is Magic”. I can imagine for someone more versed in the world that the deeper understanding of the lore would be very exciting. Writer Jeremy Whitley crafts a well constructed tale that drew in even this old curmudgeon. I also found the art by Tony Fleecs truly pleasing. While recognizable as the My Little Pony brand I was able to see a lot of small elements of style that had me searching comixology to see what else he could do.
I wouldn’t be a grumpy old man if I didn’t have a complaint or two. I said earlier this was the series finale of Legends of Magic, but that’s not quite true. Indeed, it was a lie! I was personally mislead and chose to continue the deception here for dramatic effect. The cover read finale but the last page states “concluded next month in My Little Pony Annual 2018”. This is presumably referring to the Legends of Magic annual 2018 advertised on the back cover. This small gripe aside I really liked this book and would recommend it. Sure if you’re over thirty and reading this book in public I’ll unfairly judge you, but what do you care? I’m just a grumpy old comic snob.
Rating – Very Fine (VF) or 8.5/10
